Today, Leo XIV has appointed Monsignor Paolo Andreolli, until now auxiliary bishop of Belém, as the new Bishop of Ponta de Pedras, Brazil. Born in Italy in 1972, Andreolli is a Xaverian missionary who has worked in Brazil's Amazon region since 2007. He was consecrated auxiliary bishop of Belém on April 15, 2023. Footage of that consecration shows a ceremonial pagan gesture toward the end of the liturgy inside the cathedral. A man raises and shakes a ritual tool, a maracá-like rattle, over the newly consecrated bishop, performing an Indigenous-style ritual blessing. A globe representing the Earth is also presented. To be honest, Bishop Mutsaerts isn’t so much praising Leo XIV. He merely observes that when “a pope” visits France, hundreds of thousands come out to cheer him on. Not so much because of what Leo XIV does, but because—as Bishop Mutsaerts says—people—and especially young people—have a hunger for spirituality and are open to the Christian faith. In this, he sees the beginning of a “resurrection of Christianity.” He does not mention Leo XIV further.
