Quebec shows its anti-Christian secular colours
The only private Catholic high school left in Quebec trying to survive with some governemnt funding is forced on principle to go fully private. The Jesuit Loyola High School, in Montreal, opened its doors 130-year-ago. Those in charge recently made the decision not to compromise their Catholic identity, and so they will go totally private by 2029.
The stumbling block is the passage of Bill-9, An Act respecting the reinforcement of laicity in Québec which forces every institution in the province receiving public funds to comply with secular policy. It prohibits prayer in public, faith services during the school day and all religious symbols. In short, if the school takes governemnt funding it cannot be fully Catholic.
Loyola High School has a history spanning 130 years. The school released a public statement saying part:

The Vatican has released a document marking the 60th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council’s Nostra aetate, praising the ecumenical efforts which the text engendered and calling for a renewed “shift in mindset” to produce a “new ethic of dialogue”.
In a Note published on September 16, the Holy See commented on its ecumenical efforts of the past six decades and welcomed the “shift in perspective” which has developed between religious leaders, resulting in a “culture of dialogue and a ‘culture of encounter.’” This must continue with renewed impetus so that fraternity may be built up between the various creeds, the Note “A journey of hope” stated.
