This January, the Catholic internets were abuzz (largely stemming from this Substack post and the many reactions to it) with discussion and debate about the role of the parish. Should you go to your territorial parish, no matter what? Is it “church-hopping” to drive by three parishes to the one you want to attend? As the pastor of a personal parish in a personal diocese, I have certain natural interests in these questions! The very existence of the Ordinariate, along with other personal parishes (like ethnic parishes and those devoted to the usus antiquior), brings out some of these tensions in modern Catholic life. The parish exists for the faithful, not the other way around. I wonder if the suspicion we sometimes find toward non-territorial church attendance relies on a false idea that the practice of the Catholic faith must look the same for everyone. Amalfi - Saint Andrew's "Race" ritrattidalmundo 27.6.2017 This grand event happens twice per year in Amalfi, the summer religious festival taking place on June 27th and the winter celebration on Saint Andrew’s feast day November 30th. While the same main events take place for both, the June festival is often graced with better weather and summertime crowds. As the late morning mass comes to an end, the Piazza Duomo fills with locals and visitors waiting to see the procession leave the church. The bronze doors open and soon the Archbishop Orazio Soricelli makes his way down the steps. As the statue of Sant’ Andrea appears at the top of the staircase, I feels as though one collective breath is drawn in from all the people in the piazza. Slowly the men carrying Sant’ Andrea begin to make their way down the steps. Month of The Sacred Heart, Not Pride Month Look, we’re in the month of June, and if you open your phone or walk down the street, you’re getting bombarded with “Pride Month” imagery. But as Catholics, we know June doesn’t belong to the woke culture; it belongs to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It’s actually a pretty stark contrast if you think about it. The world spends thirty days celebrating the ego, while Christ calls us to look at His pierced Heart, the ultimate symbol of unconditional, self-sacrificing love and profound humility. English Saint Enshrined (1930): Blessed John Southworth. BritishPathe Remains of blessed John Southworth - martyred in 17th century - placed in Westminster Cathedral. London. Saint John Southworth was ordained a priest in 1619 at Douai, an English college based in what is now France during a time when Catholicism was illegal in England. After he graduated, he started his ministry in Lancashire. Here, the priest was first arrested and jailed in London. In 1630, he was deported to France but returned to attend to those sickened by the plague. The priests was then arrested in 1637 and continued his ministry in and out of jail until his execution in 1654. During his trial, St. John Southworth refused to hide that he was a priest and was sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered in Tyburn.
