Seventy church buildings in the Diocese of Roermond are currently in the process of being closed, Bishop Cornelis Van den Hout, 61, of Roermond, Netherlands, told Nd.nl on March 3. In 2026, he employed a full-time economist to oversee the closure of church buildings. "It's an urgent issue. The financial figures leave us with no other option," Bishop Van den Hout said. Churches have become so far apart that, more and more, only those who can afford a car (or a round-trip Uber) can attend Mass. That leaves out most of the old, disabled, and just plain poor. Of course, one benefit of that is the attendance numbers decline more and the closure of more churches can be justified. It's "Let them eat cake" instead of the Bread of Life for them (they only put a widow's pence in the collection basket, anyway).

On Tuesday, the General Secretariat of the Synod published two final reports from the study groups established for the October 2024 Synod. Study Group Number 3 concerns a comprehensive strategy for Christian mission in the digital age (30 pages). Study Group 4 concerns the reorientation of priestly formation (25 pages). War is a punishment for sin, but nations have a right and a moral obligation to keep their countries safe and that means war oftentimes cannot be avoided.
