In a statement, the archdiocese said Rev. Javier Aizpún's remarks were "strictly personal opinions" that "neither represent nor are shared in any way by this diocesan Church." The controversy stemmed from a post on X.com in which Aizpún, parish priest of San Juan Evangelista in Huarte and a canon of Pamplona Cathedral, wrote: "May Our Lady of Africa, patron saint of Ceuta, inspire the reconquest of Morocco and its conversion to Christianity. In May, Czech police detained Hilarion in Karlovy Vary after searching his car and finding four containers containing a white powder. Czech authorities later identified the substance as cocaine. Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke has called on Catholics to defend the sacrament of marriage and the Christian family even at the cost of suffering. Nigerian police are investigating the killing of Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi Oyetoro, a Catholic priest of the Diocese of Lokoja. His body was found with multiple machete wounds to his head along a roadside in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, on July 29. According to Kogi State Police, officers responded to reports of a lifeless body and later identified the victim as Fr. Oyetoro. Seven years after his death, the Capuchin bishop Juan Rodolfo Laise still lacks a proper grave inscription in the Capuchin cemetery of San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. Bishop Laise became internationally known for defending the practice of receiving Holy Communion on the tongue. During debates within the Argentine Episcopal Conference in 1996 over the introduction of Communion in the hand, he chose not to implement the indult in his diocese, maintaining that receiving Communion on the tongue remained the universal norm of the Church. After retiring, he settled in San Giovanni Rotondo, where he spent his final years serving as a confessor. Although a marble slab was placed over his grave at the time of his burial in 2019, it still bears only the temporary paper funeral notice affixed on the day of his funeral. Six Jewish extremists were arrested after spitting at the Armenian Orthodox St. James Monastery in Jerusalem, verbally abusing a woman who filmed them, and throwing rocks. Their punishment? A 15-day ban from Jerusalem's Old City. The Armenian Patriarchate says these attacks are part of a growing pattern of anti-Christian violence and is urging the Israeli government to treat them as hate crimes. The Religious Freedom Data Center (RFDC) documented 83 attacks against Christians between April and June 2026, almost twice as many as the previous quarter.
