An unknown person vandalised the parish church of Absam near Innsbruck, Austria, in the afternoon of 15 March. The perpetrator set fire to religious items, including pages from a hymn book and artificial flowers placed beneath a crucifix. Further damage was caused near the votive candles, and the holy water dispensers were also damaged. The police are investigating.

Father Alfonso Avilés, one of two Ecuadorian priests who died while rescuing altar servers from drowning at sea, celebrated Mass in the Roman Rite. According to the Archdiocese of Guayaquil, Fr Avilés and Fr Pedro Anzoátegui rushed into the water during a Lenten parish activity in Playas, on Ecuador's Pacific coast, after two altar servers got into difficulty. Both teenagers survived, but both priests lost their lives in the rescue attempt.
